Classes
What to expect in a yoga class
There are so many different platforms to use when discovering yoga. My aim is to provide a bit of information to give you a sense of what to expect and reduce any anxiety you might be feeling.
In-Studio
In a typical studio class, arrive 10 minutes before to get yourself settled. Some studios may have an option to rent a yoga mat if you do not already own one, and/or have blocks available as well which can help to modify certain postures. When you enter the room, quietly find a spot to place down your mat and wait for the class to begin. While you wait, you may do little stretches to warm up your body, clear your mind with some quiet meditation, or even just take a few sips of water and lie down. You do what you need to to get into a headspace where you are receptive to whatever the class will offer. Setting an intention or a mantra for yourself is a good way to create a meaningful practice. Here are some examples that I use: "I am focused on the here and now", "I accept my body as I am", "I deserve this me time". The yoga studio can be described as a 'sacred space', and so we navigate through it with respect for ourselves and others around us. Once the class begins, follow the teacher as they guide you throughout your practice. Always remember that you are in control of your body, and you do what feels good for you.
In the Park
I might be a little biased since I discovered my love of yoga through outdoor practice, but yoga in the park is my FAVOURITE!
Much like in-studio, arrive early and get yourself settled in the way that makes the most sense to you. I recommend finding a spot that is flat and shaded and drinking plenty of water throughout your practice. Park yoga is a little less formal and invites you to tune inwards while inviting nature's sounds and sensations. In the park, this might just be a car driving by or kids playing nearby. Use the sounds, feel your toes in the grass below, and remember to have fun! As always, you decide what you invite into your yoga practice.
Online
This new world of online practice is ever-changing, but generally, through Zoom (or other digital live platforms) the etiquette is to mute yourself upon entry and wait for the course to start. I recommend using the chat feature to say hello, or communicate with the instructor if need be. You will be invited to turn your camera on, which can help the teacher to establish a feel for where you are at in terms of your practice and offer adjustment cues to follow, but really it is up to you. There is no pressure to do anything that you are not comfortable with, even if that means opting to just listen to the practice instead of participating. Sometimes the practice may be recorded, but the instructor will always let you know. The online practice serves as a tool to guide you through your own yoga journey, in a safe and familiar space (your home!).

As well as being a certified 200h yoga teacher, I have also completed additional training on teaching Kids Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Yin Yoga as well as Restorative Yoga, and workshops on how to approach yoga for beginners. I guide yoga through the lens of a Trauma-based approach and work with my students to meet them where they are at regardless of their yoga experience. I've taught in larger group settings, but can also tailor private classes and offer accommodations along the way. If yoga is something you are curious about but are not sure if it is for you or even where to start, please reach out and I will help you along that discovery process.
You've got this!
